February Reading Log

After reading 52 books in 24 days in January, I crashed and burned, as I knew I would. February saw one of my lightest book months EVER. I mostly only listened to audiobooks at night before bed, and read just 2 Kindle books. My month finished out with a measly 11 books ~ easiest swap to read of mine ever, huh? :)

Mostly I was playing Skyrim during Feb. I also had my first cold of the winter. YAY for making it that far before getting on and for it not being all that bad. Zycam really works!

So, on to the few books that I read! March should be more full, with a 2 week read-a-thon coming up, starting on the 11th.

53 – A Great and Terrible Beauty (Gemma Doyle 01) by Libba Bray
Completed 2/2
3 of 5 stars
This book appears on lists such as if you like Harry Potter, try this.  Because there was a school and magic, I suppose?  It wasn’t anywhere near the caliber of Harry Potter, and I didn’t like the first half of the book.  The girls were too catty and causing lame issues with each other.  It was just dull. Once she told them about her ability it got a little more interesting and the end ended up being good.  I doubt I’ll read more of the series though.

54 – Pawn (Blackcoat Rebellion 01) by Aimee Carter
Completed 2/3
4.5 of 5 stars
This one sat on my TBR for a while and was never high on my radar.  It was picked for me to read for a CL swap and I was so glad that it was.  It Kitty Doe is tested and ends up a III, a low number in their world with no prospects.  She takes an offer from the Prime Minister to become a 7 without question and she ends up being transformed into another person.  It was a really captivating story with good characters.  I really liked it and really looked forward to reading more.

55 – Brotherhood in Death (In Death #42) by J.D. Robb
Completed 2/6
4 of 5 stars
Not one of my favorites but still really enjoyable.  This one was about a series of murders in which the body was badly tortured, displayed and claimed that justice was served.  Dallas finds out the men being killed were not good guys.  The Trueheart scenes were really enjoyable, great to see him grow.  Wonderful series and another great book.

56 – Captive (Blackcoat Rebellion 02) by Aimee Carter
Completed 2/8
4.5 of 5 stars
Another great story though both of the main characters drove me crazy at times in it.  In this one, Kitty is tried for treason and sent to Elsewhere, where all she knows about it is that people there are hunted.  Things aren’t as they seem though she doesn’t know that for quite a while and she’s unbearable for a while.  Still, mostly really enjoyable.  Going straight into the next one.

57 – Queen (Blackcoat Rebellion 03) by Aimee Carter
Complete 2/9
4 of 5 stars
Disappointed in this one for a few reasons.  Definitely didn’t care for the flipflop ofher heart.  Made it seem like you couldn’t LOVE and be IN love with you best friend, and I know firsthand you absolutely can. J  Also thought there were WAY too many times she could have killed whoever she wanted to kill and she just didn’t want to take a chance, despite her saying that if she did what she had to it didn’t matter if she died.  She could have killed dozens of times but kept finding reasons not to.

58 – Frozen (Heart of Dread 01) by Melissa de la Cruz
Completed 2/13
3 of 5 stars
I really wasn’t sure what to rate this.  I liked it, I think?  It was good, but definitely not great.  But I’m not sure what was lacking for me.  The action parts I enjoyed, especially the ending, but the slower parts were really dull.  In it, Nat is looking for a paradise land said to be in the middle of the frozen land.  She takes her chances on some runners to get her there.  The characters were flat for the most part, it was just ok.

59 – The Blackthorn Key by Kevin Sands
Completed 2/17
3 of 5 stars
Didn’t wow me.  Some good parts, lots of boring parts.  Christopher is an apprentice who finds some clues after his master is killed.  He has no idea what it is that he’s being pointed towards but he goes through tons of stuff to find it, then to keep it from the people that want it for themselves.  The end was enjoyable though the story was pretty slow for the most part.  Ok characters.

60 – Epic (Epic 01) by Connor Kostick
Completed 2/22
3 of 5 stars
I didn’t like this nearly as much as I had hoped to.  It’s a story about a virtual reality game being played which is something I love a lot, but this one just took FOREVER for me to get into.  I did end up enjoying it, a little after half way through when they went on a big quest, but until then it was just blah.  I think I didn’t feel any connection to the characters, didn’t really like one of them in particular.  It was just ok for half of it then it was good.  I doubt I’ll read the next one.

61 – Submission (Deviations 01) by Chris Owen
Completed 2/24
4 of 5 stars
This is a M/M erotica, so I won’t give any details.  I enjoyed it though and was glad to see that the BDSM was done correctly.

62 – Stolen (Heart of Dread 02) by Melissa de la Cruz
Completed 2/25
3 of 5 stars
I decided to give this one a try because I needed to read the 2nd book in a series for a challenge.  I wasn’t super impressed with the first one but I ended up liking this one more.  It’s definitely different with a girl who is a dragon rider and works with her dragon to save her land.  There were some slow parts but overall it was fairly enjoyable and I will definitely finish out the rest of the trilogy now.

63 – Totally Worth It by Maggie Cummings
Completed 2/26
5 of 5 stars
This is the first lesbian fiction that I actually LOVED.  It wasn’t an erotica, so I can tell you about it.  Basically it’s a community in NY that is a lesbian based community.  Meg is a new arrival to town after a recent bad breakup.  She’s trying to make friends in the community.  Lexi has lived in the community all her life but hasn’t really felt a part of it.  The two become friends and the book is mainly about them searching for friends and for love.  I LOVED the characters, loved the stories.  Can’t wait for the next book!

64 – This Green Hell (Alex Hunter 03) by Greig Beck
Completed 2/29
3.5 of 5 stars
This is my favorite Alex Hunter I think, even better than the first.  We see Aimee again (who is in the first book) and she’s in Paraguay searching for microorganisms in gas deposits, but they find a lot more than just some little creatures.  Alex gets called in to go down and help out and the usual craziness happens.  I definitely liked the story more than the first two books, the second one especially.  I was definitely surprised by the ending though and will continue to read the series for now.
