My "The Night Circus" dream cast

I'm not a celebrity fan. While there are a few that I have liked over the years, I don't actively read about celebs, or follow any, or care about what they do, or don't do, in their private lives.

I've also never done a "Dream Cast" for a book before. I don't think about who could play whom in a book I love, because I don't know a lot of celebrities, and I don't really think about it at all, ever.

But a recent discussion in a group at GoodReads had me thinking about it for the first time ever, during my re-read (re-listen) of The Night Circus ~ my absolutely favorite book!! I get worried about if they would actually do a movie, what if they would mess it up? I'd want the book just done, nothing added and nothing taken out. It's perfect like it is.

So, who would I want in my dream cast? Well, I haven't figured everyone out yet, but I had a few thoughts last night while listening. Subject to change, here's what I think. I may have taken liberty with ages/race and so on. These are in the order that I came up with them as some were easier to cast than others, for me. :)

Book Review ~ Gone to Her Grave by Melinda Leigh

I received this book from NetGalley for my honest review.

Gone to Her Grave is the second book in the new "Rouge River" series by authors Kendra Elliot and Melinda Leigh, a series of novellas set in small town Solitude, Oregon.

NOTE

PLEASE NOTE ~ I am unable to turn off my emotions when I read / review. This book is likely MUCH better than my review. My judgement is clouded by my own personal feelings. The first book was fantastic, and some of this one was as well. Please take this review with a grain of salt and try the series, as it's very enjoyable.


Book 2 starts where book 1 left off. There's still a new drug out there that is killing people. In this one, a woman is in the hospital, still alive, after trying the drug her kid brought home with him.

Carly Taylor, the sister of Stevie from the first book, is a social worker who believes that the kid who is accused of dealing the drug is innocent. She sets out to try to prove it, getting herself involved in 3 separate issues/families. She's also separated from her husband who believes her job is too dangerous and she's left him because of that. They have to work together to find out who the dealer is, and to get the drug off the street before more people are killed.

As for my thoughts on the book, please remember I'm clouded by feelings about this, so I did not like it as much as others will.

The story is quick moving and, in my opinion because of many things, not nearly as good as the first book. I'm not a fan of Carly and if this had not be apart of this series I really want to continue reading, I would not have read this book on it's own. Seth isn't much better than Carly, trying to control her and what she wants to do, and they don't talk to each other.

The story of just the drugs and searching for who is dealing is fine. The stories with Carly and the different families is not. It's hard for me to rate, really, even harder for me to read. I hope fans of romantic suspense will try this series. It's fantastic, overall.

Wonderfully Wicked Read-a-Thon Oct 17th-27th

After my crazy reading month in August, I said I wasn't going to join any read-a-thons / challenges until Dewey's on Oct 18th. So, I'll stick with that, technically. :)

I had thought about not joining anything until the Ho-Ho-Ho RaT that I have seen around, but I finally went and looked at it, and saw that's it's based on reading holiday books, which I don't really do, so instead I decided to join in the Wonderfully Wicked RaT. I'll just start on the 18th for it, so I'm still sticking by what I said, and continuing my reading for that week. :) Hopefully Dewey's and WW RaT will get me back into a reading mood, as I really got burned out in August, and haven't read much (for me) since. I'm ready to get back to it!

No goals yet, I'll revisit that as it gets closer, and definitely no pre-planning on books. I'm just a fly by the seat of my pants type read-a-thon-er. :)

          He had just decided on her shoulder, and stuck out his hand to stop her trajectory, when she gave a small kick, moving just a tiny bit faster than he had anticipated. He knew exactly what was going to happen only a fraction of a second before it did.

          Yup, right on her breast.

She didn’t flinch or raise her head. She just said, “Forward, much?” and splashed some water at him as she came to a halt.

          He snatched his hand back, saying, “I was aiming for your shoulder, but the target moved at the last minute.” But even as he said it, he knew his grin was the biggest fucking giveaway ever.

          Beth laughed, just loud enough to be heard. “Good thing you had better aim in Afghanistan, or neither of us would be here to touch my boob.”

          The thought of her touching her own breast was almost enough for him to go from zero to “that never happens, I’m so sorry” in just a few seconds. Fuck the presidents.

          “Well, that would be a crime. The thought of neither of us being able to touch them.” In for a penny, in for a pound, was that what she’d said? “That night in Afghanistan, you know, before you carelessly got yourself shot, when you reached to check the .50-caliber gun, I saw the smallest part of your bra. I never forgot that. And then when I cut off your pants and realized your panties were the same color, it was a feat of superhuman strength that kept my mind on administering first aid and trying to stop you from dying. I mean, for a moment, it could have gone either way.”

          “Really? Either way, huh?” She flipped herself upright and treaded water next to him, getting closer and closer. Beth took his hand in hers and drew it down. Down past her waist. And touched it to her hipbone. Then, lower, so his fingers were slowly stroking from her hip downward. When he touched her skin instead of her swimsuit, he swallowed. It took every ounce of strength in his body not to press his fingers against her center, slide them under her swimsuit and feel her heat.

          Instead she stroked his fingers lightly over her scar. It felt soft, but slightly ragged. In seconds he had flashed back to when he thought he’d lost her. Frantically pushing back the tide of fear, trying to get the pararescuers to land and take her to safety. Some other emotion overwhelmed him, overtook his pure lust for her, and he slid his hand around her wet neck and pulled her the few inches to him.

          Her lips were soft, yielding. For a second. Then she slid her free hand around his hips and brought him against her. Electricity shot through him. There was nothing hotter than a woman who took what she wanted. Nothing.

          Her mouth opened under his assault and he slid his tongue against hers. He had an overpowering need to hold her, to bask in her, to protect her. His mouth pressed against hers as if he was keeping her alive somehow. Breathing life into her.

          Suddenly they were underwater, sinking into the warmth of each other and the water. He maneuvered her to the side of the pool and slid her up the wall so that they could breathe again. Bracing her against the wall, he held her up while he kissed her, pulling away only to bite at her water-slicked neck.

          She shuddered under his touch, as if he had just brought her back to life.

          “We shouldn’t do this,” she murmured. He didn’t hear her as much as felt the tremor in her neck.

          “Hmm?” James said, mouth still on her neck.

          “We shouldn’t do this,” she said, a little more clearly this time.

          James pulled away to assess his ability to persuade her, but only heard his father’s voice.

          “No, you really shouldn’t,” it said.

Book Review ~ Over the Line by Emmy Curtis

I received this book from NetGalley for my honest review.

In Over the Line, James saved Beth's life. It's most of a year later when their paths cross again and the attraction they both felt is still evident. James, trying to get out of a family affair, asks Beth to join him for the weekend, but a series of threats has them attending, with Beth posing as James' fiance. He's asked her to pose as his wife-to-be to ward off his family's constant pushing of him to marry someone with prestige and to leave his job to follow in the steps of his father.

This book is the first that I have read by this author and it was pretty good. I really enjoy romantic/erotic suspense, and while this book is more of the erotic/romance variety, it still kept my interest, for the most part. Both James and Beth are likable characters, the plot funny and fast paced. It was a quick, easy and enjoyable book, and I would probably read more in the series.

As for the bad, there was a bit for me. First, they are lying to the family which I am fine with, his family (mother and father) are worthless, but I have a problem when they start lying to each other. Clearly they both want more and instead of sitting down and having a real conversation about their relationship, they have sex and ignore the issues, causing more issues. It's all done to create drama, and completely pointless. Then there's the matter of the "bad guy" who was completely evident from them happening to come across him. I think the author trying to steer people in another direction but it didn't work at all. It would have been better to have a completely different and unknown threat.

However, overall it was entertaining and enjoyable. I would definitely say it's leaning towards an erotica. While most of the action is not specific enough for how I think of erotica (actual in depth details) there's a lot of stuff you don't typically see in normal romances, such as masturbation. It was some enjoyable stuff and I really liked that part of the book. The book was quite enjoyable, and I recommend it for fans of romantic/erotic suspense.

Our Anniversary Weekend!

It's our "together" anniversary this weekend! Jesse cooked for me last night, he's taking me out to a small place tonight for dinner and he's cooking me dinner Sunday as well. So spoiled am I!! :) Love it.

So are you wondering, why do I say it like that ~ "together"?
It's because we have a totally unique love story!

Please forgive me as I ramble, about my Love!! If you'd like to stop reading right here, that's perfectly understandable (I do go on and on!). If not, and you'd like to hear a story, let me tell you about our unique how we met / got together story!


Jesse and I actually met in the beginning of our our junior year of high school, 21 years ago right around now. Though we'd been in the same school for our Freshmen/Sophomore years, we hadn't come across each other. We met our Junior year at lunch when we sat at a table with a mutual friend.

Jesse can tell you more about that day than I can, I just know I found my best friend then. We just clicked, so fast and so strong. He was my best friend, I adored him so much. We did everything together, we were always hanging out.

While I loved him, I wasn't IN love with him, and he maintains, even 21 years later, that it was love at first sight for him. We had a VERY brief time of "more" in H.S., which I called "best friends with a twist". But I didn't want to lose him as a friend. I had always lost boyfriends, no matter what, and he was too important to me to lose, so I broke it off, because I didn't want to lose him. That backfired, because I lost him. :( We were never the same after that. I broke his heart then, and a few more times, and we were barely speaking by graduation. We saw each other just a handful of times after graduation and happened to run into each other less than 2 years later (Feb 1997), which was a very strained encounter. He was married at the time and I was newly engaged and I left saddened that I had been without my best friend and we'd never have that again.

Fast forward to the end of September of 2004. My ex had walked out almost 2 years prior. I wasn't looking for love, but I was lonely. I didn't really have many friends at the time and after being a shell of a person for a while, I decided it was time to be social again. I decided to look Jesse, and another friend, up, see if I could find them and see how they were doing. I couldn't find Jesse online anywhere, so I ended up sending him a letter to each (4) of the addresses I found for him. One was close enough to him that it found it's way to him.

At the time, Central Florida had just been hit by 4 separate hurricanes, so he had my letter a few days but when his power came back on, he emailed me right away. I can remember that so vividly. I was in the middle of the Magic Kingdom, having just done an event for work. I ran into an old friend of mine so I was walking around with them. They were headed to Splash, and had Fast Passes, so I was waiting outside for them. I checked my email on my phone and saw an email titled "I got your letter" and I was elated!! Here's some of what Jesse wrote (I'll save the emails forever!) ~

I got your letter

I can't tell you how shocked I am to hear from you. I must have read that letter a hundred times. The address was an old one, but I'm still very close to that place, so it found it's way to me anyway. I'm still almost speechless, but I'll say this - I have missed you too, and yes, I want to be your friend again.

I would love to see you, but unfortunately the timing couldn't be worse. I'm moving this weekend. I hope that we can be friends, but if we're going to see each other in person it's going to have to be in the next couple days. It would mean a lot to me if we could sit down face to face before I leave and get caught up. I'm sure we both have a lot to say about the last few years. I want to hear all about how you've been and how life has treated you.

Please let me know when you get this. I missed you too and it means the world to me that you have gotten in touch with me after all these years. I honestly thought we were out of each others lives forever. I'm so glad I was wrong.

I emailed him back right away, just briefly saying I was out and I'd write him when I got back in. I ended up leaving my friends when they got off the ride and headed home. I was so excited and I wanted to talk to my best friend again. Would he be like I remembered? Would we find that closeness we had? Would it be awkward? It seemed like it could be ok, by the tone of his email, but who knew! Here's some of what I emailed when I got in.

Re: I got your letter

Well,

Now that I'm home, let me write you properly. I check my emails on my phone sometimes, and as soon as I saw "I got your letter" I knew it was you, and I was so happy. :) I guess you only got one letter... I sent 4. LOL!! I sent one to each address that came up for you, except the arianna one.

Why are you moving? How can you move after I just found you again? LOL!! Its gotta be about me, doesn't it? Kidding! I hope that we could meet up before you go. Tomorrow is out for me, but I can meet up anytime Wed, even if we could meet up for dinner, I'd love it, if you are able to.

I'd write more, but I have so much to say, I don't know where to begin. I have so many questions, and just want to hear how you have been these too many years.

I hope to hear from you, and catch up on how you have been. Its been WAY too long, and I've missed you so much! I want to hear all about you, when you can.

We ended up emailing, then talking on the phone and then getting together that night. I went out to meet him, we met up around 10pm in a McDonald's parking lot. I was SOOOOO nervous waiting on him. When I saw him and he was walking towards me, neither of us could stop smiling. I walked into his arms and we hugged and hugged. I whispered to him "Oh Jesse, I missed you so much!"

We went back to my place and stayed up all night talking. What I was looking for that night was my best friend. What I found was someone who had never stopped loving me, even after 11+ years. How could I not fall right back?! We got together that night (October 4th 2004) and we've been together ever since. It wasn't a typical relationship from the start. We didn't have any awkward "getting to know you" phase, all we had to do was catch up on 7 years of what we missed in each others lives, but we knew each other already.

Since then we have basically said that we felt like we've been married since that first week together, because in our hearts, we were. We did end up making it official though, Mar 1st 2007, but we never even really celebrate that date, today is the important anniversary to us. Today is when we got "back" together. Hard to believe it's been 10 years!!

We had our rocky moments in the beginning, it wasn't always perfect, especially since I was still hung up on my ex for quite a while. But we made it through and became stronger than anything I thought possible. Since then, life has thrown us into hell, but through it all, we remained strong. Our love kept us going when neither of us wanted to. It's been rough but our love is amazing. Being married to your best friend in the world is so wonderful. Even after all these years, we still are always talking to each other, and hate being apart. He's my Best Friend, my Lover, my Husband, my Everything.

September Reading Log & Monthly Wrap-Up

               This was a lesbian based book, which I haven’t read before unless it was erotica.  I enjoyed this one, over all.  I didn’t like that there were flashbacks, it slowed the story.  It was about an undercover cop who is forced to be involved in a bank heist at the bank where her former girlfriend manages.

               I haven’t read these Hogwarts collection of books yet, so I decided to take the time to read ‘em.  I’m not a fan of short stories / novellas because I always want more, but for a TBR RaT I did, I read some of each, to get through them.  Fantastic Beasts was an interesting and informative read.

               Took me a really really long time to get into this book, otherwise it would be a 4 star book.  The last 30% was the best.  A genius former FBI agent travels the globe helping law enforcement find serial killers.

               An interesting, new to me, series.  Hailey and Taylor are twins with a special gift, they can sense and feel things.  A fellow classmate died and they are trying to figure out what happened.  Would have been better if there weren’t some annoying characters!

               I am a HUGE WH13 fan, and I miss the show.  I read both this book, and some of the WH13 comics.  I LOVED the book, seeing a new Warehouse story.  I wish there was more than just that one.  I miss the show!

               I really was enjoying this book until the end.  I definitely didn’t like the ending though I saw it coming some, but not to the degree that it did.  It was definitely HP-ish, with kids going to a magical school, but there’s just not the same relationships or good people.  It was OK, I don’t know if I would continue with the series.

               The Jasper Dent series is about Jasper who is the teenage son of a serial killer.  I read the 4 prequels to the main books.  In this one, it tells how G William caught Billy Dent, Jasper’s father.  It was an ok story.

               This one was my favorite of the prequels.  It dealt with Jasper’s girlfriend and there was a neat scene they did in drama.

               A story based around Amanda Knox’s story.  A lot more annoying characters in this one.  The story itself and the character’s stunk, but Hailey and Taylor were always enjoyable.  Love them, and their story.

17 ~ Ajax Penumbra 1969 by Robin Sloan

               A good novella about how Penumbra came to the 24 Hr Bookstore.  It was a good background and an enjoyable quick read.  Worth it, if you were a fan of the main book.

18 ~ On her Father’s Grave (Rogue River 01) by Kendra Elliot

               This was an enjoyable ARC novella from an author I really enjoy.  In it, Stevie returns to her hometown to be near her family after her father dies.  She gets a job with the Sheriffs department and is called in early when a teen is found dead.  Really enjoyable book, and looking forward to more.

               Another ARC that was FANTASTIC!!  Loved it.  If you are a fan of time travel, and understand it to a degree, I highly recommend this series about a time traveling teen who is trying to stop changes that keep happening to the timeline.  Fantastic book!

               An enjoyable short story about two characters from another series.  Was good to read, though I would have liked a full book for them.  It was enjoyable characters with a good story.

21 ~ The Yard (Murder Squad 01) by Alex Grecian

               Victorian London, Scotland Yard is dealing with the Ripper, and now has new cases on their hands.  I enjoyed the later part of the book, took forever for me to get into.  Pretty ok over all, nothing great.  Some cooler stuff about the discovery of fingerprinting was pretty neat.

22 ~ Maze of Bones (39 Clues 01) by Rick Riordan

               Another solid Eve Duncan story.  I’m still loving this series.  I love that she got involved in the prep of their holiday party, it was a new, and good, side to her.  As always, a fun read.

               The last 25% of this book was the best part.  The rest of it was too much sitting around talking and whining, which are reasons I normally hate New Adult.  I read the first and it was all action, not so with this one, no action til last 25%.  Still ok, but too much dullness.

               This book was the last one I read when they first came out.  I wanted to read the series, I just never got around to it, so I’m listening to them now.  They are ok.

               This series is one I'm still enjoying from Patterson.  I usually get tired of them after a while.  Another good solid book, though I didn't like part of the story.  Thankfully that part didn't last long.
